A few introductory words about me:

I wrote my first computer program at college in 1978. I  started working in IT in the early 1980's as a programmer, and discovered software testing in the early 1990s since when I have not looked back.

I have formal qualifications in programming, analysis and design, project management and software testing. I have wide experience in a number of industry sectors including; Insurance, Finance, Banking, Treasury, Logistics and Utilities.  This has been gained in; software house, consultancy and end user environments.

Since 1992 I have specialised in software testing bringing to bear my previous experience of over a decade as a programmer, analyst and project manager.

I have experienced the full development lifecycle as a project manager, and have reporting at board level.   Latterly I have split my time between program test management on large ($100M+) projects and the design and implementation of testing change programs.

Currently I focus on the following areas:

program test management

testing strategy & testing methods

testing and development lifecycles

testing change and transformation

quality assurance & management

acceptance testing

testing metrics

testing automation

I am also conversant with project management, project & programme office, release management and quality management roles.  My strengths come from formal training in structured methods combined with practical and pragmatic experience of building software systems, testing them and successfully implementing them into live operation.

Since 1995 I have become a frequent and popular keynote speaker at testing seminars and conferences. I have served on conference program committees, review panels, and awards deliberations, and I recently wrote a chapter for the book Agile Testing How to Succeed in an Extreme Testing Environment Watkins.

I am also involved in voluntary activities within the testing community serving as Secretary of the BCS SIGiST Standards Working Party since 2001. The group is currently producing the next set of British Standards for software testing, addressing non-functional testing techniques (
